HEAR HERE was born from Commons Archive.
Started in 2015, Commons Archive is a creative, grassroots history project that builds neighbor relationships. Commons Archive connects neighbors through shared memories, workshops & celebrations. We empower neighbors as narrators & creators of their many local histories. HEAR HERE evolved during COVID-19 in partnership with multicultural community organizations. Isolated neighbors were seeking safe ways to nurture belonging in their neighborhoods—we still need this today!
HEAR HERE Community Billboard Truck is a multimedia vehicle that builds community, amplifies neighbors’ voices, and makes neighborhood histories accessible. This custom-built electric clean vehicle is equipped with a large-format digital screen and on-board sound system. Its small size and eco-friendly design allows that Community Billboard to fit in many locations including playgrounds, parks, streets, plazas and more.

To learn how to live with one another, we need to share and listen to each others’ stories.
We honor the many histories of the rapidly changing East Bay neighborhoods, understanding the importance of preserving local knowledge. If these stories are undocumented, they will disappear. Commons Archive empowers neighbors as experts in their own experiences. Our interactive programs leverage multimedia formats, encouraging neighbors to share stories.
Our community engagement team broadens our reach by talking with people about thought-provoking questions. We’ve recruited Black young adults, born and raised in the East Bay, who have an interest in social justice. Our team skillfully creates a trusting and welcoming environment, actively listens, and empowers neighbors to document their stories.
